In 1953, an experienced swamper and sideboom operator named Armon H. Bost developed a product to serve as an alternative to the complicated, unreliable mechanical pipelayers then being used in the pipeline industry. His product, the first hydraulic-operated sideboom, was used to lay natural gas lines in Detroit, Chicago, and New York. More importantly, it launched the beginning of Midwestern Manufacturing.

Bost’s belief in hydraulic technology paid off. Hydraulic pipelayers proved to be more precise, easier to operate, and less dangerous than mechanical models. In the ensuing years, Midwestern sidebooms set the pipeline industry standards for innovation, safety and reliability.
